Health and Safety

Health and Safety part of life, every day there are risks in everything we do from making a cup of tea, walking the dog, crossing the road to driving to work, using public transport, doing housework, and home improvements. Our actions and the decisions we make ultimately determines the outcomes on whether we are safe and not injured.

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. It is from this one piece of legislation that all other modern health and safety laws came from.

It sets out the general duties that:

  • Employers have towards employees and members of the public
  • Employees have to themselves and each other
  • Certain self-employed have to themselves and others

There are some people who feel there is too much Health and Safety, however, imagine a world where Health and Safety did not exist. Doing whatever you like, however you like and others around you doing the same. Naturally, there are risk-takers in life, people who like to bend and break the rules, but then if there are no rules who is to say they are doing wrong. But then disaster strikes, you lose your sight or hearing, maybe losing a limb or two or you actually kill someone but never mind, that's just work…Is this the type of world you would like to live in? Every day not knowing if it will be your last, or having to be the one to tell a family that their loved one will not be coming home. It is for these reasons and more that Health and Safety DOES exist in the workplace. No one wants to be injured at work, that is why everyone has a responsibility for Health and Safety.

Think about all the different Health and Safety subjects you have heard about and if and/or how they apply to you in your workplace:

Fire Safety Manual Handling
Risk Assessments First Aid

Work Equipment COSHH
