Manual Handling Courses
Manual Handling is a term that we will have all heard a million of times before in regard to different activities that we do and complete every day, however, do you really know what it covers.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) defines Manual Handling as “The transporting or supporting of a load, including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling or carrying by hand or by bodily force”. This in reality means whenever you are lifting or putting something down, pushing or pulling an object using your hands or using the power of your body, no matter the object, this is Manual Handling.
The objects that we manual handle all come in different shapes, sizes, and weights, some are easy to manual handle, others not so. After completing a risk assessment on the activity and following the hierarchy of control for Manual Handling, it may be safer to use a piece of equipment to complete the manual handle. However, you will need to trained on using that piece of equipment in order to use it safely and correctly.
So here at Your Training Health & Safety, we see Manual Handling as more than just lifting a box, unless that is literally all you are required to do in your job.
It is a fact that still in the United Kingdom today that one-third of all workplace accidents are caused by poor manual handling. The Health and Safety Executive reported 480,000 workers suffering from work-related musculoskeletal disorders (new and long-standing) in 2019/2020. 152,000 workers suffering from a new case of work-related musculoskeletal disorder in 2019/2020. And 8.9 million working days lost due to musculoskeletal disorders in 2019/2020. All of these high figures are something we can control, something that we can say no to - if it is too heavy, awkward, needs more than one person, etc. something that unless we speak out you or someone you know may get a debilitating or career-ending injury.
We are able to deliver accredited Manual Handling courses should you require this or a more bespoke course suitable to your line of work and the manual handling activities you and your employees complete, using your activities as practical learning where and if possible.
