Safeguarding is a term used in the UK and Ireland to denote measures that protect the health, wellbeing and human rights of individuals, which allow people - especially children and adults at risk to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. 

In the UK alone in 2019, there were over 98,000 children in care. Of that figure, over 60% of those children were in care due to being neglected. Children in care are four times more likely than their peers to have mental health difficulties due to their past experiences.

In England and Wales, two women are killed each week by a current or former partner. In the year ending March 2020, an estimated 5.5% of adults aged 16 to 74 years (2.3 million people) experienced domestic violence. These figures are likely to be higher this year due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
