Why is Manual Handling important in Norfolk?

When you think about it, how often do you do Manual Handling in a day? Well, when you understand that Manual Handling is the transporting or supporting of a load, including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, moving or carrying by hand or by bodily force, then actually you can see you are Manual Handling all the time.

Simple everyday tasks that you complete without really thinking about how you are doing it... pushing or pulling a door open or closed, carrying small items around, moving bigger items using the power of your body.

But what does Manual handling have to do with me?

So, I am guessing you are asking what does this have to do with you. Well, if you are working in one of the many warehouses in our area, you may well be using a piece of equipment that helps with Manual Handling. Pump trucks, sack barrows, Trolleys and Dollies, all require skills and knowledge in Manual Handling in order to use them safely and correctly and reduce the risks of injury. Working with people in the Care Industry, the moving and positioning of people use some manual handling principles and techniques as people react and move completely different than an inanimate object.

Who needs Manual Handling Training?

Each year, the Health and Safety Executive produce statistics on the health and safety at work. Between 2019 – 2020, a staggering 480,000 workers suffered from a new or long standing work-related musculoskeletal disorder causing over 8.9 million working days lost. The top three industries with higher than average rates of musculoskeletal disorders are all industries prevalent in Norfolk:

  1. Agriculture, forestry and fishing
  2. Construction
  3. Human health and social work

Think about it, how many times have you been stuck behind that tractor or sugar beet lorry. How many times have you been to Thetford forest and surrounding forest trails. Everywhere I look, there are new housing estates and flat blocks being built… construction, construction, construction. And who doesn’t want to retire here. We have a high number of Nursing and Care Homes, Sheltered Accommodation and Houses with Care, plus multiple care and support agencies supporting our ageing population of Norfolk.
